All new clients, whether experienced in Pilates are not, attend a 55-minute 1:1 assessment for £35. This is valuable to:
- Start to understand Pilates fundamentals
- Review different start positions to understand your alignment
- Perform some exercises that we do in the group classes
- Increase your confidence before joining a group class
- Ensure we don’t disrupt the flow of ongoing group classes for other clients
- Discuss any injuries and appropriate adjustments required for your body
- Make sure you join the most appropriate class for your ability
- Where applicable, familiarise yourself with the equipment (reformer or tower)
- See if The Pilates Gym is the right fit for you!
Absolutely – we have many clients who start Pilates with us after recommendations from physios, chiropractors, GPs, consultants etc.
During the 1:1 assessment we can determine if group classes will be suitable for you, or if further private sessions are required and we can discuss adaptations required for your body as necessary.
Take care: So many classes are advertised as ‘Pilates’ nowadays (which was not the case when the Pilates Gym opened it’s doors in 2014!) Therefore, we would suggest you do your research and discuss what qualifications the teachers have before attending a class, particularly if you beginning your Pilates journey is based off medical advice.
Smaller intimate groups with a maximum of:
Mat – 12
Reformer – 4
55 Minutes.
Email us at thepilatesgym25@gmail.com or call/message us on 07468 962 952 to organise your initial 1:1 assessment. Following the 1:1 assessment, bookings for group class courses can be made either by email or our electronic booking system .
Comfortable, stretchy, fitted, clothing and no shoes. Loose, baggy clothing makes it more difficult for your teacher to review your alignment. For comfort, you may wish to avoid clothing with buttons, zips etc.
If you are doing equipment classes (reformer) you must wear grippy socks. We have some on sale in the studio.
Equipment classes – grippy socks.
Mat classes – initially all we need you to bring is a mat and a small head cushion or towel for your neck alignment. As you continue to attend mat classes, you may wish to invest in your own head cushion(s) and small equipment such as a Pilates ball, stretchy band and hand weights. We can recommend equipment and/or order some items on your behalf if needed.
At the end of all classes we ask that you wipe down any large equipment used and small equipment you have borrowed with wipes we supply.
No. Our classes are designed to be inclusive and adaptable for a wide range of abilities and experience levels – age is but a number!
We focus on creating a supportive and welcoming environment for everyone taking pride in our personalised approach greeting all clients by name. One of the joys of this approach is the fantastic conversations and connections with each other that happen before and after class. There is always something to catch up on, share or laugh about – adding to the sense of community we are so proud to have created.
If you have any concerns, please feel free to reach out – we would love you to find a class that is the right fit for you. Age is but a number and Pilates is for everyone
Yes, you can park for up to 3 hours free of charge on the Beckett’s Farm main car park (and we promise we won’t keep you in class for that long but cannot promise you won’t be tempted by the shop, cafe or other businesses on site after a daytime class!)
If you are on site after 8:40pm (for a 1:1 for example) we will need to input your car registration details to avoid a parking fine.
If you have regularly undertaken Pilates before you were pregnant, yes, you can continue to come to group classes, although it is inadvisable to do Pilates between week 8 to 14 of pregnancy.
Once you reach week 16, some of the exercises undertaken in group classes and the pace of these classes may become uncomfortable to you, or risky for you and your baby. For example, it is against medical advice to lie in your relaxation position (semi supine) and we are sure you won’t want to be in prone! Therefore, from at least 16-weeks on, we suggest you book private sessions so that the class can be tailored to you and your unborn baby.
After your baby’s birth, we recommend you wait 6 weeks until returning back to Pilates and after receiving medical clearance.
Pilates was designed by Joseph Pilates who was born in 1880 and used physical fitness to improve his own health issues. During World War I he designed his exercise method “Contrology”, which we now call Pilates (after the man himself!) He moved to New York and opened his one and only studio in 1926 (the studio remains as a Pilates studio to this day which Rhian visited in 2025 whilst on holiday for a Reformer and Chair class!) Joseph Pilates died in 1967 so did not see the widespread popularity of Pilates that exists today.
Joseph Pilates repertoire of exercises is not likely to be achievable by the general population – a lot of his clients were ballerinas and boxers with immense strength and flexibility. Although some of his original exercises do appear in our beginner classes (you all have him to thank for The Hundred!). Therefore what we also teach at the Pilates Gym are movements that are based on the original repertoire that will build the strength and technique to achieve the full repertoire (should you so wish to!) You will experience much more of the original Pilates repertoire in our progression and advanced classes.
Pilates exercises:
- Focus on building a strong centre which is essential for overall balance, stability and alignment
- Mobilise and stabilise all joints in the body (emphasis on spine, hips and shoulders)
- Incorporate breathing techniques to increase oxygen flow
- Increase body awareness so you can apply your knowledge to everyday life
- Involve performing flowing movements with control and precision
- Are low impact and kind to joints
- Encourage a mind to body connection – meaning you are focusing solely on what your body is doing whilst in a class
